Slow Order is a railway term traditionally used as a requirement to lower the set speed limit of a section of rail due to maintenance. With the rail track set in the vertical, the notion of what we are to maintain is now brought into question. The work considers the rail track as not only a signifier of the many industries it has supported, but also how it, through its time in service as evident in its eroded and marked surfaces, can be studied, supported and commemorated.

The Ballarat Railway Station Pubic Art commission by Robbie Rowlands was part of the implementation of heritage interpretation at the redeveloped Ballarat Railway Station Precinct by Lovell Chen and Pellicano.
